5 Dinner Crockpot Recipes So Good You'll Skip Takeout

On this page

Takeout usually wins on nights when chopping vegetables feels like another chore. These slow-cooker dinners bring familiar restaurant-style sauces to the table with less last-minute work.

They are not exact copies of any restaurant dish, and that is the point. You can adjust sweetness, salt and spice while the cooker handles the protein and sauce.

1. Korean-Inspired Gochujang Beef Bowls

Serves 4 | 6 qt | Low 7–8 hrs | Prep 15 min

A sticky chili-garlic sauce can make beef feel like a weekend treat. Chuck becomes fork-tender without a long session at the stove.

Put 2 lb thawed cubed chuck over 1 sliced onion with ¾ cup beef broth, 2 tbsp gochujang, 3 tbsp reduced-sodium soy sauce, 1 tbsp brown sugar and 3 minced garlic cloves. Cover on LOW for 7–8 hours until beef shreds easily, then serve over separately cooked rice.

Gochujang brands vary a lot in salt and heat. Start with less paste for a milder sauce.

2. Thai-Inspired Peanut Chicken

Serves 4 | 6 qt | Low 4–5 hrs | Prep 12 min

Peanut chicken is rich enough to make plain rice feel special. Fresh lime keeps the sauce from tasting too heavy.

Add 1½ lb thawed boneless chicken thighs, ½ cup coconut milk, ½ cup broth, ¼ cup smooth peanut butter, 2 tbsp soy sauce and 1 tsp ginger to the cooker. Cook on LOW for 4–5 hours until chicken reaches 165°F, then stir in 2 tbsp lime juice.

Whisk the peanut butter with a little broth before adding if it is very stiff. Keep chopped peanuts out until serving for better crunch.

3. Sweet Chili Turkey Lettuce Cups

Serves 4 | 6 qt | Low 4–5 hrs | Prep 15 min

Lettuce cups give savory turkey a fresh contrast. The sweet chili sauce coats the meat without a wok.

Brown 1½ lb ground turkey in a skillet to 165°F, then add to the cooker with ½ cup sweet chili sauce, ½ cup broth, 1 tbsp rice vinegar, 2 grated carrots and 1 tbsp ginger. Cook on LOW for 4–5 hours until the carrots soften, then serve in chilled lettuce leaves.

Keep lettuce completely separate from the hot filling until serving. A spoonful of lime juice tones down an overly sweet bottled sauce.

4. Moroccan-Inspired Apricot Chickpea Lamb

Serves 4 | 6 qt | Low 8–9 hrs | Prep 20 min

Warm cinnamon and dried apricots make lamb taste different from everyday stew. Chickpeas help the meat stretch across four generous bowls.

Combine 2 lb thawed cubed lamb shoulder, two drained 15 oz cans chickpeas, ¾ cup chopped dried apricots, 1 diced onion, 1 cup broth, ½ tsp cinnamon and 1 tsp cumin. Cover on LOW for 8–9 hours until the lamb is tender, then stir gently before serving.

Choose shoulder rather than a lean lamb chop for slow cooking. Serve with a fresh cucumber salad if you want a cooler contrast.

5. Chinese-Inspired Five-Spice Pork Noodles

Serves 4 | 6 qt | Low 7–8 hrs | Prep 15 min

Five-spice pork turns a simple noodle dinner into something worth anticipating. The fragrant broth is especially good poured over noodles.

Place 2½ lb thawed boneless pork shoulder over 1 sliced onion and add 1 cup chicken broth, ¼ cup reduced-sodium soy sauce, 2 tsp Chinese five-spice and 2 tbsp hoisin sauce. Cover on LOW for 7–8 hours until the pork pulls apart, then serve with separately cooked noodles and scallions.

Cook noodles right before serving so they do not turn soft in the pot. Shred the pork into the broth instead of reducing it to a dry filling.

Set out the bowls before dinner and finish these recipes with the bright or crunchy ingredients they need. You will get better results from measured sauces than from pouring every bottle into the pot.

FAQs

Can these replace fast wok cooking?

They offer similar flavors but a softer slow-cooked texture, not the crisp edges of stir-frying.

Can I use chicken breasts?

Yes in some dishes, but start checking earlier for 165°F so they do not dry out.

Why add vinegar or lime at the end?

Acid brightens sauce that has been heated for several hours.

Can I freeze leftovers?

Most cooked meat and sauce portions freeze well, but pack crisp toppings separately.
